SA Health hired private detective to vet Oakden complaints

    The South Australian government hired a private detective to look into complaints at the state-run Oakden aged care centre and interview distressed relatives, records show.

    Documents obtained by The Australian include letters of complaints to health executives from families of Oakden residents about poor care of their loved ones, and transcripts of ­recorded interviews taken by private investigators about those complaints from as far back as 2006.

    Jack Kent, 61, yesterday said he was among those subjected to a ­recorded interview by private ­investigator Gary Petts on September 22, 2006, after complaining to a senior executive of the state’s mental health service about the care of his mother, Margaret. The Oakden home includes specialist wards for elderly ­dementia patients, who have been so poorly treated the state government has announced the centre will be closed, following a damning review.
